Well, sort of - first you have to lure the guard (two screens to the right) one screen to the left. Then you go up in that screen, round to the first one, slip behind the guard and run for the exit.
Skips out the bothersomeness of getting yourself a sword.

Yes, but because it's an old game, there's no... anyhoo, basically, they assumed in the programming that when you started the second level, you'd have the sword - because "technically" it's the only way to get past the guard in the way of the exit.
So, in the second level, you have a sword.
